Chapter One
Las Vegas Requiem
Nick ducked automatic weapons fire from three positions on the desert road after the front wheels blew from sniper fire. Nick swerved the Toyota Highlander perpendicular to the road, halting it to block shots blowing out windows as he rolled free of the cab. Yep… he was bait once again, only a few days after my UFC Heavyweight Championship win at the MGM Grand Arena. Nick sprung our trap for the Somali Mafia, Doc Bostig unleashed on us New Year’s Day afternoon. Jonas, through his undercover patchwork role for the mobs of Las Vegas’s underbelly, presented us with the newly arrived Somali Mafia. They originated in Minnesota, where nearly a hundred thousand non-assimilating parasites drain the blood from the state who accepted them. Now, they’re branching out.
Unfortunately for Nick, we sped toward his ambush scene from nearly five miles away. We leaked information on the ‘Dark Web’ Nick acted as a drug courier carrying ten thousand hits of oxycodone coming from Los Angeles along Interstate 15. His route would be to take Interstate 161 from 15 to South Las Vegas Boulevard, entering Vegas the back way. Instead of hitting him at first
light in the desert nearer to Vegas, the forces of evil hit our bait man, El Muerto, in a bleak stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard, miles before we gambled. We lost the gamble.
“Oh shit!”
I see what Lucas belched out about as we approached, watching from Nick’s collar cam on Lucas’s iPad. Muerto waits until the automatic firing ends for a couple seconds, then stands and races toward them in a wide zigzagging form, having no doubt memorized the flashes. There he is, our Muerto, two Colt 1911s, with outlawed thirty round magazines, at the ready.
“Fill your hands, you son-of-a-bitches!”
“Jesus… Recon… he’s a dead man,” Lucas muttered.
I clung to silence with the rest of my Monsters, our hands fondling weapons we could not bring to bear in defense of a brother. We watched as every muzzle flash died. They missed, Nick McCarty didn’t. He charged without hesitation, letup, or pause in his varying zigzag of life. We watched as one hotspot after another fell silent. We enjoyed the stunned Somali Moslem faces flickering into view, as they died firing wildly where Nick no longer was. Silence reigned a moment later, except for the deep breaths of our brother Muerto.
“Oh, good Lord.” Lucas put his head into hands. “We’ll have to endure the ‘Army of One’ for the rest of my time on the fuckin’ planet.”
“Yes!” Casey danced in the van with arms pumping in honor of his Delta Force brother.
After a short pause of silence, Lynn spoke. “Did you damage all my toys, Muerto?”
“Did you just insult me, Crue?”
Lynn sighed as everyone in the van enjoyed Nick’s death pronouncement of Somali Islamic mutants. “I forgive you, Muerto. We’re glad you’re okay.”
“I’m Army strong,” Nick stated in deep voice, causing an eruption of over the top amusement while Lucas turned the van blue with Marine drill instructor epithets. “Hey, Pap, maybe it’s time for the student to become the teacher.”
Lucas snorted, trying not to reveal how relieved he was Nick still lived. “Gather intel, Dead Boy, and quit foolin’ around pattin’ your own ass.”
“Ooh Rah!”
“How many, Nick?”
“Six, brother Achmed. Any beeps showing yet on the radar?”
“Not a one. That was a close call, Nick.”
“Did you just insult me, Achmed.”
That cracked up Jafar for a moment. “I guess I did. We’re only one minute out.”
“Acknowledged.”
I thought of the more mundane part of this. “Nick, you’ve had experience with Las Vegas. How have you handled bodies before?”
“I drive them out in the desert, throw in a few magnesium flares and walk away. Why, do you think I should get Dev to teach me ‘Last Rites’ in Latin?”
That amused the Monsters once again at the mention of our brother, Devon Constantine, scholar of Latin spells to mostly entertain.
“I know better than that, heathen.”
“Wait a minute! I believe in God. I don’t believe in Somali Moslem mutants. Are you wearing your UFC Heavyweight Champion’s belt today?”
“I thought about it,” I answered to much applause. “Too gaudy for a blood filled crime scene.”
“I see the Jeep they rode out into the sand with. I’ll wait for you guys to spot it and back me. It hasn’t moved, but I don’t know if there’s a driver inside, or he’s running in the sand. I see you.”
“I’ll go with you, Nick.”
“You’re too damn big, John. You all draw a bead on the Jeep and quadrants around it. I’ll approach with care. I may draw out the driver if there is one and you can wound him for Dr. Deville.”
“Agreed.” We spread out, picking the areas we would watch for hostiles, and called them out to each other. “We’re ready.”
Nick approached the Jeep, moving in horizontal patterns at a rapid pace. He reached the Jeep without anyone revealing a presence other than his. “No keys in the ignition. Oops… we have a runner. Small feet trekking out into the sand. I’ll follow at speed while continuing to weave. If the runner has an automatic weapon, I would be grateful if one of you nailed the bastard.”
“I thought you ‘Army of One’ guys were less whiney,” Lucas replied, while scanning. “Hey… I see her, Nick. She’s a hundred yards on your left at your 10 o’clock. No, dummy… your other left!”
Nick chuckled. “I had to get around a boulder, Pap. Can you put a few rounds in the ground near her feet while I approach and call out for surrender?”
In answer, we peppered the ground at our runner’s feet, evoking a yelp type scream we could hear even from our position in the quiet desert. She put her hands in the air, yelling something we couldn’t hear. Nick put her down hard, not bothering with small talk. After confiscating a sidearm and giving her a professional pat down for other weapons, he restrained her and lifted the woman for guidance back to our position. She went right to work on Muerto to our amusement.
“You tried to kill me!” The woman screamed over and over in heavily accented speech. She danced around as Nick kept her moving in her boots, khaki pants, and olive green t-shirt. Very dark, with a matching olive green head covering, she appeared ready to rumble in the desert. “Let me go! Murderer!”
We enjoyed her complaints, with Nick trying to get her to shut up, which added Lucas into the mix. “Good Lord, Army Strong… shut her the hell up.”
“She’s primed for Dr. Deville,” Nick replied. “I don’t want to ruin her introduction.”
“Quite right, Muerto,” Lynn agreed. “We need a lead to where the hell all these bushwhackers came from. She panicked and ran instead of trying to drive away. That makes me wonder if they trusted her with the keys.”
“Good one, Lynn,” Nick said. “She didn’t have any keys on her. There weren’t any in the Jeep ignition, so if she wasn’t the driver, what the hell is she?”
“I am innocent!”
Nick hurried her along to us. Lynn ran over to the woman and bitch slapped her to the ground. “Shut the hell up!”
Lynn slammed down on top of the now sobbing woman, slapping her hard again. “Cut the crybaby shit. Why is it you don’t have keys to the Jeep on you?”
“Aadan… Aadan has the keys! Do not strike me!”
“What the hell did they bring you along for?”
“I…I am Tanishia… Aadan’s woman. I kept watch and listened on… on police band. He did not figure to… need me for anything else.” She pointed at Nick, jabbing her finger in outrage. “He killed Aadan! He…he killed everyone… no warning!”
Oh did we enjoy her gem of an accusation. Lynn patted her cheek and straightened. “That was so stupid, we’re not wasting any time on it. We’ll be getting traffic soon. Show us which one is Aadan so we can get the keys for your friends’ funeral pyre?”
“I…I will not!”
“Old school,” Lynn stated, beginning to kick her ribs in. Three smashing, hurtful demonstrations and Tanishia began crawling with her face in the sand.
“I will tell! Don’t…don’t kick me… I will tell!”
Nick straightened Tanishia, taking her around to the bodies. The second one he turned over to show her was Aadan, although with a bullet through the center of his face. Nick retrieved the keys. “I’ll bring the Jeep over to load.”
Nick ran towards the Jeep while we stripped the bodies of weapons, electronics, whatever ID’s they had on them, and took pictures as well as fingerprints. By the time Lucas and Lynn finished the identification checks, the rest of us had the bodies loaded. We brushed the sand over the combat scene, including repositioning the straggly vegetation.
“I’ll take the Jeep out until it can’t go any further with my mag flares,” Nick volunteered. “What do you want to do with my disabled chariot? They scrapped both front tires.”
“I’ll drive it a mile up the road on its rims if I have to,” Lucas said. “You can call for a tow somewhere to get the tires replaced before you turn it in. Get moving. We’ll wait.”

; Nick gathered what he needed from our two vehicle kits. He drove it while keeping communications with us. The Jeep didn’t get stuck for nearly a mile and a half. We saw a vague indication in the sky of a fire in the distance, then a muffled explosion. Nick jogged into sight fifteen minutes later. We picked Lucas up down the road and headed into Vegas after we gave Tanishia a knock-out shot so as to keep her quiet until we arrived at Nick’s Vegas dwelling. Inside, we were all impressed. A beautiful ranch style interior decorated in western form, it served our intent nicely. We packed light so Lynn got out her eardrop method of enlightenment. We weren’t going to turn in Tanishia for anything. Anyone participating in a drug-heist/execution gets the death penalty. The only question was how painful would her departure from the planet be? Nick and I anchored down her top and middle while Clint took the feet. Then, Lynn awakened our sleeping princess.
Upon realization of her predicament, Tanishia began a scream, but received a rubber-ball gag instead. Then Lynn crouched down to smile into Tanishia’s eyes. “Hi, honeybunch, we have questions for you. We want to know where your Somali Mafia friends are hanging out and all the names you can give us, especially the leader. We also want to know who created this branch of you Moslem mutant thieves out here in the West, freshly relocated from Minnesota. If you’re helpful, you can leave this world without much pain. Play tough girl and I will burn the brain right out of your skull.”
Lynn showed the horrified Tanishia, red and blue eyedroppers. “This red one I drip in your ear will make you think your head’s on fire. The blue one is the antidote. I have to give you a little sample just to get you on board, sweetie. Then we’ll give you a chance to be my good little helper.”
To say the red eyedropper potion nearly blew the eyeballs out of Tanishia’s head would be an understatement. After only thirty seconds, Lynn put in the blue eyedropper solution to neutralize the acid mix. “Uh oh, I may have gotten a drop too much in there.”
Tanishia came back to us in a slow progression from completely insane with pain to blathering idiot as Lynn took the gag out. We were recording, but Lynn had to keep slowing her down, making her go through the names and places in slobbering slowness. “Okay, sweetie, that was very good. Now… is there anything else about the place where you mutants conduct operations we should know? If I don’t believe you’ve told me everything, I get my bottle of ear cleaner out again.”
